Visions of Breakfast

“I can’t explain it, Shan,” Lisa said, “It’s just a feeling ok.” She poked at the egg yolks with a piece of toast. “All I know right now is my head is pounding and the dream felt real. I mean I was there, but it wasn’t me. I don’t know who it was or why I saw it. Have you ever looked at yourself in a mirror in a dream?”

“Maybe it’s the drugs,” he said. He stood at the kitchen counter pouring a cup of coffee. “You’ve taken them for so long and now this new doctor wants you to quit cold turkey. That has to do something to your mind…”

Lisa looked over his shoulder, out the kitchen window. She wasn’t sure what she was looking for but it had to be there. “There’s something more to it,” she said. “I’m not addicted though, I just want to sleep.”

“I know, but you haven’t been able to sleep right in ages.” He sat down beside her and cut into his eggs with his fork. “This stuff isn’t going to clear up overnight. It’s never that easy.” Shan covered her hand with his and squeezed it to reassure her. “Did the doctor say anything else about the side effects?”

“He gave me a list, I checked it again this morning.” She pulled a sheet of paper from her pocket and placed it in front of him on the table. “The thing is, the dreams aren’t on the list. And the something more…” She caught his gaze with her own. “This is going to sound crazy.”

“I don’t think anything you say right now will sound any crazier than everything else we’ve gone through with this.” A soft smile crossed his lips.

“There was someone watching us last night. I could feel them,” she said. Her body shivered with the memory. “Hell, I think it touched me too. I felt cold fingers on my stomach before I slipped into the first dream.”

“I won’t say you’re crazy,” he said. “But the drugs have done something to you and we need to figure out what.” His voice was level, no trace of malice or condescension.

“I’m not crazy,” she said. “I’m not.”

Shan’s reply was cut off by the blaring wail of the fire alarm. Black smoke wafted out of the toaster, and filled the kitchen. Shan pulled the plug and dumped the brunt crust of bread into the sink.

“Shan,” Lisa said. “Look at me.”

He spun around. “What?” The toaster fell from his hands to the floor with a bang. At the sound of the crash the outline shaped like a person dispersed like the smoke that blew out of the kitchen.
